This may be the clearest and simplest approach to strategy yet. (This article is based on the work by Felix Oberholzer-Gee captured in his book, Better, Simpler Strategy.)

Why it matters: Often, low performing companies can be characterized as inward looking. This usually leads to, intentionally or not, competing on cost as the default strategy. There are a select few who are very effective at being the low-cost producers in their markets. Most, however, join the “race to the bottom,” a stressful, chaotic attempt to eke out profits in mature markets. On the other hand, an outward looking mindset searches for ways to create and grow value through helping other members of their value chain: customers, employees, and suppliers, grow their value.
