Ink, Sustainability, and Regulatory Challenges

A raft of legislation under the European Green Deal has been, or is planned to be, implemented by the EU to make society more sustainable. The activity with the biggest impact on the printing and packaging industry is the Packaging & Packaging Waste regulation. European section editor Ralf Schlözer looks at the issues involved in and potential impacts of these new laws.

It is the ink (or toner) that turns a piece of paper into a printed product. Accordingly, ink not only plays a key role in printing and packaging, but ink properties are also critical in recycling.

A raft of legislation under the umbrella of the European Green Deal has been, or is planned to be, implemented by the EU to make society more sustainable. The activity with the biggest impact on the printing and packaging industry is the Packaging & Packaging Waste regulation. While the framework has been adopted, work continues and implications are now becoming clearer and the impact could be substantial.

The EuPIA is the European Printing Ink Association and represents the majority of European paint and ink manufacturers. Christof Walter from EuPIA recently presented about the deep impact this could have on print at the Intergraf Print Matters conference.
