Products in Motion: European Print Imports and Exports

Differing labor rates, scales of operations, and specialization contribute to a busy trade in print products among European countries. This article, by European section editor Ralf Schlözer, provides an overview of the types of print products crossing borders, as well as trends that have developed over the last five years.

In a previous article, I looked at amounts of print imports and exports in Europe, focusing on the value of print products being traded among the European countries. In this article, I’ll focus on the specific types of products being traded. Print products are diverse and the trade statistics offer some insight here. The analysis focuses on the five largest countries in Europe: Germany, UK*, France, Italy and Spain, with the data for all countries summed up.

It is quite obvious that the product categories are a bit out of date as the print industry has changed considerably in recent years. Also, large segments as packaging, décor, and mailings are missing. Some of these missing segments could be rolled up in the last category (n.e.s. = not elsewhere specified), although it is likely that large amounts remain under the radar.
