The Paradox of Organization

In the last stage of the process of getting things done we confront the issue of Organization. Being organized and flexible at the same time can be maddening. Without this behavioral competency we can make great decisions on a routine basis and have them fail continually. Wayne Lynn explains why.

Have you ever worked really hard to make the right decision on a crucial issue facing your company? You looked at the problem from several angles and sought input from others whose experience and vantage points offered valuable insight. It helped you with the clarity you needed to make your final choice.

Then you worked really hard on gaining alignment within your company. You communicated up and down and sideways. You explained how your decision furthered the achievement of your strategic direction and the goals that supported it. You were your best self in drumming up support and enthusiasm for the decision. You looked carefully at your balance sheet and your human assets and assured yourself that you had, in hand, the necessary cash and people resources to implement your decision and move nicely in the direction of your vision. 

Working with your team, you brainstormed all the possible things that could go wrong in your implementation efforts. As you found those pitfalls, you and the team developed answers to the “What will we do if?” questions. You developed the confidence that the company could handle whatever came along.
