Even the ancients knew that the road to self-improvement and a better life started with achieving a higher level of self-awareness. Historically, this was achieved through reflection and introspection. If you were willing to open yourself to criticism, feedback from people you trusted could be very helpful, as well. Journals and diaries were often used to record people’s thoughts and the feedback from others. Journals were reviewed frequently to detect patterns and develop new understandings of why they behaved the way they did.

Honestly, this can be a very effective method to develop the self-awareness needed to start down the path to bettering yourself. However, there is one difficulty to this approach: it takes quite a bit of time, not just to do the process, but also to get to a point where you have enough information to begin self-improvement. I’m not saying you can’t decide to start on something that you quickly develop a deep interest in, but I prefer the more holistic approach that comes from having a more complete picture.
