While most of Europe shares a common market nowadays and trade barriers are low, the printing industry in Europe still consists of many national industries and markets.

The industry sizes typically relate to the size of the economy of the country, but sometimes there are differences to consider. For the UK, however, the share of the Western European population, GDP, and printing industry revenues are remarkably in line, being close to the 16% mark.

Sizing the European print industry can be a tough business, as in some areas the data is not available or in other cases multiple sources exist which contradict themselves. For example, data sets from British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) do not always agree with the Eurostat (the European statistical office) numbers. Accordingly, when using this data, it is important to keep in mind the source and the limitations it might have.
