Tailored Industry Revitalizing Knitwear Manufacturing in Brooklyn

Up until about 25 years ago, knitwear manufacturing was a big deal in Brooklyn. But since then, much of it has moved offshore. Tailored Industry is looking to revitalize knitwear manufacturing in Brooklyn using proprietary on-demand software and 3D full-garment knitting technology.

Alex Tschopp founded Tailored Industry in 2017 with a goal of rethinking from the ground up what it means to be a contract manufacturer in today’s fast-paced retail environment. Could he make it possible for brands to launch new products in a one- to three-week timeframe instead of the traditional 12 to 18 months? He shares his story with Senior Editor Cary Sherburne in this interview.

WhatTheyThink:  Alex, first tell us about Tailored Industry.

Alex Tschopp:  We are combining a newer type of industrial 3D knitting machine with a proprietary software platform to enable an on-demand and just-in-time manufacturing service for fashion brands of all sizes. We have a team of nine people and about 4,000 square feet of space in Brooklyn. We are using Shima Seiki knitting machines and currently have 10 machines in operation.
