Grover Daniels, the Boston Copy Cop chain

About a year ago, WhatTheyThink reported that fourth- generation commercial printer and industry thought leader Grover Daniels had acquired the Boston Copy Cop chain. We recently checked in with Grover to see what changes the past year has brought to Copy Cop and where he plans to take the business from here. We also learned that Kevin Ruttan, who was senior vice president and chief technology officer at Daniels Printing, Grover’s former company, from 1990 to 1998, has again teamed up with Grover to architect the company’s new technology infrastructure.

WTT: Grover, great talking to you again. We are anxious to hear how you have progressed with your business strategy relative to Copy Cop. First, I understand Kevin Ruttan has joined your team. Tell us a little about his background and what role he will be playing at Copy Cop.

GD: Kevin was the CTO at Daniels and the primary architect of our transition from analog to digital. He recommended and implemented changes in prepress and in composition that allowed us to go from proprietary systems to what was in those days called open architecture—not as open as things are today, but a much more open environment for the time. We went from high-end proprietary systems to Mac and PC based systems, and we were one of the first to deploy PDF workflow initiatives in the financial printing business. I am delighted to be reunited with him. His skills are exactly what we need at this stage of the business.
