GPO Honored for App Development

Press release from the issuing company

The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) was honored for developing the FY 2013 Budget app by the Center for Digital Government. GPO received a Digital Government Achievement Award which recognizes outstanding websites and applications developed by Federal, state, and local Government agencies. GPO created the FY 2013 Budget app in February making it the first time the Budget of the U.S. Government was available as an app. The mobile Web app provides users with free access to the text and images of the FY 2013 Budget, including the Budget Message of the President, information on the President's priorities, and budget overviews organized by agency. The app also provides links to GPO's Federal Digital System (FDsys) where summary tables and additional books of the Budget, including the Analytical Perspectives, Appendix, and Historical Tables are available.

"This award is an honor and a testament to GPO's efforts to make Government information available to the public in popular formats," said Acting Public Printer Davita Vance-Cooks. "Developing useful apps is just one of the many ways GPO serves as the digital information platform for the Federal Government."

The FY 2013 Budget app is the second mobile Web app developed GPO. The first, the Mobile

Member Guide, was released in November 2011. GPO also supported the Library of Congress in developing an iPad app for the Congressional Record.

GPO is the Federal Government's primary resource for producing, procuring, cataloging, indexing, authenticating, disseminating, and preserving the official information products of the U.S. Government in both digital and tangible formats.  GPO is responsible for the production and distribution of information products and services for all three branches of the Federal Government, including U.S. passports for the Department of State as well as the official publications of Congress, the White House, and other Federal agencies. In addition to publication sales, GPO provides for permanent public access to Federal Government information at no charge through GPO's Federal Digital System (www.fdsys.gov) and through partnerships with approximately 1,200 libraries nationwide participating in the Federal Depository Library Program.
