CAKE's BANDmade Book project to benefit Hamilton Wood Type

Press release from the issuing company

Two Rivers, Wis. - The music group CAKE has selected Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum to benefit from the proceeds of a limited-edition, hand-made book featuring lyrics from the song "Bound Away." CAKE partnered with BANDmade Books to create just 1000 hardcover, numbered copies.

BANDmade Books brings together musicians and book artists to benefit non-profits throughout the country. Led by Pam DeLuco, whose studio is located in San Francisco, each edition is tailored to its band. Band members are involved closely from creative concept through production, using processes and materials that reflect their ideas, values and artistry. Known for its do-it-yourself, artistic and environmental values, CAKE's albums feature artwork designed and music produced by members of the band from their solar-powered recording studio.

Each copy of "Bound Away" includes a CD single of the song and signatures from all of the bands' members. These collectibles are available for $45 plus shipping from CAKEmusic.com. In addition to Hamilton Wood Type, San Francisco's 826 Valencia also will benefit from sales of the "Bound Away" book/EP.

The song comes from CAKE's most-recent album, "Showroom of Compassion," which debuted at #1 earlier this year on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. It tells the story of a traveling musician and paints a realistic, often unglamorous picture of life on the road. The 5.25x5.25-inch book illustrates the lyrics using linoleum blocks, hand-carved by the band and volunteers. CAKE and volunteers also printed the pages using two-color letterpress Vandercook proofing presses and handset type in Alternate Gothic No. 2 and Univers. The books were bound with handspun hemp, waxed with San Franciscan beeswax from DeLuco's personal hive.

Adding an even more personal touch, the cover paper for "Bound Away" contains pulp made from the band's members old, cotton clothing. The book's text pages are 100% post-consumer recycled paper, keeping with the band's environmental values. The endsheets are handmade from reclaimed jute coffee sacks used by Four Barrel Coffee of San Francisco.

Four Barrel Coffee also will host the book/EP launch event on Sept. 23. During the event, CAKE not only will celebrate the project's release, but also will participate in BANDmade Books' paper-making demonstrations. Representatives from Hamilton Wood Type will join in the festivities, displaying its printed artwork and giving away limited-edition posters to accompany book purchases at the event.

"We feel very lucky to have been selected by one of our favorite bands as a beneficiary for this cool project. We are grateful to CAKE and to Pam DeLuco, creator of BANDmade Books, for bringing the project to life," says Bill Moran, artistic director for Hamilton Wood Type. He adds, "Thanks to this project's creative and financial success, and Pam's big heart, we are excited to participate in another BANDmade Books project with OKGo."

OKGo's limited-edition, hand-made book will be printed entirely on paper made from clothing donated by the band's fans. More information about this upcoming project, and other news, will be posted on BANDmade Books' blog.
