International Paper Publishes 2010 Sustainability Report

Press release from the issuing company

MEMPHIS, Tenn., International Paper's 2010 Sustainability Report is now available to the public at www.internationalpaper.com

Highlights of the report include:

  • From 2007 to 2010, International Paper reduced its total energy use by nearly 7 percent - that's about the same amount of energy needed to power 420,000 homes, or the reduction equivalent of removing one million passenger vehicles from the road
  • In our U.S. mill system, nearly 75 percent of generated energy is derived from renewable biomass and biofuels
  • Each year International Paper recovers six million tons of fiber - about 12 percent of total U.S. fiber collection, making it the fourth largest processor of recovered fiber and the largest consumer of recovered fiber in the U.S.
  • For the 11th year in a row, International Paper improved its safety performance and achieved its lowest-ever global total incident rate (TIR) of 0.83

"Sustainability has been a part of International Paper's practices for more than 110 years," said International Paper Chairman and CEO, John Faraci. "We are proud to play a sustainability leadership role and remain pleased with our progress. But our work is not yet done. Leadership and continuous improvement go hand-in-hand."

The forty-page report outlines International Paper's commitment to:

  • Responsibility Throughout the Paper and Packaging Life Cycle
  • Protecting and Conserving the Environment
  • Supporting Our Communities
  • Governance and Ethics
  • Putting People First

IP's Sustainability Report uses the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework, which is globally recognized for setting out principles and performance indicators for companies to use to measure and report their economic, environmental, and social performance.
