Quad/Graphics retains top patent innovator ranking

Press release from the issuing company

SUSSEX, WI – Innovation leader Quad/Graphics has again received high marks in this week's The Wall Street Journal Patent Scorecard for Heavy Industrial Equipment, which ranks patent portfolios of more than 100 global manufacturers based on quality, technological strength and industry impact.

Quad/Graphics received the highest Research Intensity score of any of the Top 50 companies in the Heavy Industrial Equipment scorecard, earning a 7.3. The next highest Research Intensity score was 4.7, and the average is 1. A high Research Intensity score indicates that a company's technology is more cutting edge than its competitors, according to the Patent Board, which partners with The Wall Street Journal on the Patent Scorecard rankings. Quad/Graphics received similar recognition in the May 20, 2008, Wall Street Journal Patent Scorecard for Heavy Industrial Equipment.

Quad/Graphics also ranked in the top five for Industry Impact, which highlights the significance of a company's patent portfolio across its industry and indicates the role patents play in serving as a basis for other printing-related patents and technologies.

Quad/Graphics was the only printer among the Top 50 companies in the Heavy Industrial Equipment Scorecard. Other companies included printing equipment manufacturers Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, KBA and Manroland, and manufacturers Toyota, Caterpillar and John Deere.

"Our ranking shows that Quad/Graphics continues to succeed in our quest to be a leading innovator," said Joel Quadracci, President & CEO. "Our patents and innovations continue to help print maintain its status as one of the most efficient and effective communications channels for publishers and marketers, while introducing new technologies to connect our clients with their customers."
