Mohawk Announces Industry’s First Premium Carbon Neutral Papers

Press release from the issuing company

[Cohoes, NY] – Mohawk Fine Papers Inc., long recognized for its progressive environmental initiatives has set a new standard of excellence for the premium paper industry. To further reduce the impact of the company’s own emissions, Mohawk has announced that its Beckett Concept and Beckett Expression lines are now made carbon neutral, which means that they are made entirely with renewable energy. In March, Mohawk joined the U.S. EPA Climate Leaders program to further develop greenhouse gas emission reduction goals. As an extension of this commitment, Mohawk has begun to purchase Verified Emissions Reduction credits (VERs) to make select paper grades carbon neutral, starting with Beckett Expression and Beckett Concept. What is carbon neutral? Carbon neutral is an emerging international trend that can describe products, operations and activities, which have had their emissions calculated and reduced where possible. The remaining carbon emissions are then “offset” through credits that fund renewable, emission-free energy projects such as wind farms and solar installations. Through this process, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions can be offset to net zero. The carbon offset market allows businesses to recognize and financially support the shift from fossil fuel to renewable energy. As partner in the EPA Climate Leaders program, Mohawk is completing an “emission inventory.” The results of this rigorous process will provide the basis for emission reductions and carbon offsets. Mohawk purchases VERs which support renewable energy projects. These offsets are third-party verified to meet the standards of the Environmental Resources Trust’s GHG (Greenhouse Gas) Registry. The GHG Registry Standard is based on guidelines developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the international scientific body supporting the Kyoto Protocol. For carbon neutral qualification, Mohawk offsets both the electricity and the thermal energy used to make paper. The thermal energy emissions from manufacturing Beckett Concept and Beckett Expression are offset with VERs. These papers are also made with wind-generated electricity through the purchase of renewable energy credits (RECs). Since 2003 Mohawk has been a leader in support of emission-free, renewable energy. In addition to voluntarily capping emissions and making significant investments to reduce energy and emissions, Mohawk is the fourth largest purchaser of wind-generated electricity among manufacturing companies in the U.S. On March 1, 2007, Mohawk Fine Papers increased its purchase of wind-generated electricity RECs from 45,000,000 kWh to 60,000,000 kWh annually. This is approximately 60% of the electric power required for all of Mohawk’s operations in its New York and Ohio facilities. Papers made with wind-generated electricity are in Mohawk’s Windpower Portfolio. These papers are Green-e certified and meet the strict environmental and consumer protection standards established by the non-profit Center for Resource solutions. Mohawk’s Windpower Portfolio includes Strathmore Writing and Script, Mohawk Options, Mohawk Via and Mohawk Color Copy. Beckett Concept and Expression have now been added to Mohawk’s Windpower Portfolio with the added benefit of being carbon neutral.
