PIA/GATF Releases New Prepress Publication

Press release from the issuing company

Pittsburgh, PA, January 23, 2007— PIA/GATFPress is excited to debut the most recent edition to its extensive collection of primers: the Digital Prepress Primer. Authored by PIA/GATF’s own Joseph Marin, the Digital Prepress Primer offers a broad overview of the digital prepress industry appropriate for newcomers and experts alike. The purpose of Digital Prepress Primer is to explain and update the ever-evolving world of digital prepress. “Prepress has undergone many changes over the last twenty years,” Marin writes in his introduction. “We have moved from a hands-on, craft-oriented method of producing work to an all-digital hardware and software-based workflow. Keeping up with all of the changes in prepress is an ongoing battle for everyone involved in print production.” Marin is an authority on prepress processes and serves as the senior prepress technologist/instructor for the Center for Digital Printing Excellence, the prepress training and production facility located at PIA/GATF headquarters in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. Marin, who worked as a prepress specialist for Herrmann Printing and Litho, Inc. in Pittsburgh before joining PIA/GATF in 1995, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in graphic communications technology from the California University of Pennsylvania. Featuring a generous array of illustrations, Digital Prepress Primer follows a user-friendly format and can be read straight through as an introduction to the industry or can be kept close by as a reference tool. Digital Prepress Primer, which includes a glossary of terms as well as a list of common file extensions for quick reference, cover topics such as: Document design and typography Color specification Desktop publishing software Color theory, reproduction, and management Digital image files Graphic arts workflow Common imaging file formats Preflighting PostScript and RIPs Digital trapping and imposition Quality control The Digital Prepress Primer (PIA/GATF Catalog No. 1753) has a list price of $30.
