Pageflex being used in the Packaging Industry

Press release from the issuing company

CHICAGO--Oct. 15, 2006-- Bitstream Inc. is pleased to announce that Pageflex technology has been adopted by the packaging industry as their choice for the Web-based production and customization of product packaging. Over the past year, packagers have demanded a way to be able to accommodate for variations on their labels and cartons and to automate the production process. This demand comes as more and more packagers need to include labeling that accommodates for different languages, nutrition, and product information across a product line. That's why package producers have turned to Pageflex, a comprehensive solution for variable data and interactive online editing of documents. Pageflex offers a number of advantages to the packaging industry: -- Robust, time-tested variable composition software -- Document composition in more than 60 languages, including Japanese and Chinese -- Dynamic document resizing for the variety of package dimensions in a product line -- Patented flex technology that dynamically adjusts package templates to accommodate new content -- Pageflex Storefront, a simple solution for package printers to offer an online document customization and ordering site -- Interactive online editing capabilities for remote participants who want to be hands-on in the package creation process "In Europe, we are seeing a tremendous demand for variability on cartons, especially in the languages and legal content, from country to country," comments Gordon Stirling, of ROI, a Pageflex reseller based in Cambridgeshire, UK. "As the need for variations increases and the business pressures to reduce costs also increases, more and more companies are turning to the .EDIT technology from Pageflex to expedite the process of making last minute changes to their cartons." Using Pageflex, package producers can create one design template for their package design, then apply different variables - including languages, color themes, bar codes, and nutrition details - to that one design. Additionally, the interactive online editing capabilities made possible by Pageflex .EDIT technology enable product marketers and designers to use their Web browser to make last minute design and text changes to a package already in the production process at the printer. Package designers use Pageflex Studio, a standard professional layout tool, to create a package template that contains the structure and design of the package. From there, product marketers can customize the package template either by making selections in a Web form or interactively editing the template through a viewer in their Web browser. These changes can include a whole range of variables such as private branding, different languages, flavors, nutrition information, colors, contents, etc. Package designers have full control over what editing options are granted their colleagues and can be sure the integrity of their package design in maintained, regardless of what language, content, or formatting gets changed. Some of the types of packages being produced with Pageflex technology include pharmaceutical companies using it to customize drug packaging, a seed packet company who develops one package template then customizes it with different variety and zone information, and a pizza box manufacturer who incorporates local advertisements. "The trend in packaging has been toward variability -- packagers need to be able to provide a range of localized and product-specific content in their package designs," says Anna Chagnon, Bitstream President and CEO. "Pageflex represents a perfect solution for this market, enabling them to design the package once, then apply the range of variables they need to produce it. It's a fast, easy and efficient way to produce packages that require a lot of customization, and it's gratifying to see that Pageflex has been recognized by this industry as the solution of choice." During the Graph Expo and Converting Expo tradeshow, Pageflex staff will be conducting a theater presentation of Pageflex' packaging capabilities each day at 4:00 p.m. in booth 4846 and throughout the day upon request.
