SUSSEX, Wis.--June 27, 2005-- The scope and efficacy of Quad/Graphics' paper recycling and recovery program has earned the printer recognition in the 2005 American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) Recycling Awards. The awards, in their inaugural year, were created to acknowledge outstanding individual, business and community recycling efforts. Considered for the 2005 AF&PA Business Leadership Recycling Awards, Quad/Graphics was declared the winner in the large business category after demonstrating it had increased paper recovery and recycling within its operations through educational, innovative and cost-effective programs and partnerships. "Quad/Graphics has long believed what is good for the environment is good for business," said Joel Quadracci, Quad/Graphics' President & COO. "We take our responsibility to the environment very seriously and realize that the long-term viability of our industry depends on the wise use -- and reuse, where possible -- of resources." Quad/Graphics takes an aggressive approach toward paper recovery and recycling. The printer has made it a priority to capture as much recyclable paper waste from its operations as possible, and in the highest grades possible for recycling. In 2004 alone, Quad/Graphics collected more than 274,000 tons of paper from its operations, and isolated up to 24 different grades for recycling. To accomplish its goals, the printer employs the best available technology. Consider: -- Currently, the printer has more than $35 million in capital assets related to paper shredding and baling equipment, with another $8 million in new, additional equipment being installed in 2005. -- More than 30 trim balers and eight shredding systems allow Quad/Graphics to package recovered paper in the form most desired by its mill partners. -- The printer has innovatively configured cutting-edge material handling technology -- such as high-capacity shredding and trim waste systems -- to automate paper collection and preparation. In addition to Quad/Graphics, Eureka Recycling (St. Paul, Minn.) also was recognized in the Business Leadership Awards, in the small business category. Meanwhile, receiving the AF&PA's Ed Hurley Memorial Paper Recycling Award for individual efforts was Judge Jack Jones (Jefferson County, Ark.). Community Paper Recycling Awards were awarded to The City of Clearwater Solid Waste and Recycling Department (Clearwater, Fla.) and Oconee County Solid Waste (Seneca, SC).
