HANOVER, Germany--March 12, 2002--Hewlett-Packard Company today described a range of futuristic technologies and applications designed to help deliver the company's vision of anytime, anywhere communication for everyone. The technologies include HP's leading research in the field of molecular electronics which could ultimately lead to the development of computers the size of a dust particle. HP also is working to create planetary-scale computing where giant facilities will have the capability to supply virtually limitless computing power whenever it is needed, much as utilities deliver water and energy today. At HP's international press conference during CeBIT, the world's largest IT trade show, Dr. Per-Kristian Halvorsen, Solutions and Services Center Director at HP Labs, described a future world where information technology is seamlessly available to people in both the developed and the developing worlds, a world in which people everywhere can access services, information and entertainment wherever they go. Halvorsen said that extending the benefits of technology to a wider cross-section of society is an essential part of the vision of HP Labs, HP's central research facility. "We are, for instance, researching the feasibility of a simple person-to-person, multi-media access device for use in developing countries which is inexpensive, easy to use and close to indestructible,'' he said. "As with all our research, we are starting with the end user, understanding their needs as well as language and other barriers to using technology.'' During the news conference, HP outlined its intention to put customers at the center of today's products and services. For Business Customers: Multifunction products designed to enable users to print, copy, fax and digitally send documents over the Internet, including the HP LaserJet 4100mfp series and HP LaserJet 9000mfp series. The large-format HP Designjet Copier cc800ps for print service providers and other professionals requiring color copying, scanning and printing-on-demand of large-sized documents. The HP Jetdirect 680n 802.11b, an internal wireless print server, and the HP Jetdirect 380x 802.11b, an external wireless print server, both designed for small- to medium-sized businesses. A new range of Intel-based servers covering the entire business-to-business market, including: HP Servers tc2110, tc3100, tc4100, tc6100, tc7100 and rc7100. HP SANlink, a network virtualization appliance that presents multi-vendor storage capacity as a single, logical pool that can be easily and centrally managed. The new HP Surestore Disk System 2300, a SCSI-connect storage device that comes equipped with fully redundant power supplies and the capacity to hot-swap components.
