Mail-Well Commences Production of Safety Oriented Envelopes

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Nov. 6 - In a bold and innovative move, the world's largest envelope manufacturer, Mail-Well, Inc., announced it will begin immediate production of safety-oriented envelopes for its customers in response to recent events affecting the U.S. postal system. These envelopes include the following products:
-- The Safety Window Envelope. This product, designed for the visual
detection of unusual substances within an envelope prior to opening,
has an extra window at its bottom to show whether any foreign objects
have been placed inside.
-- The Tamper-Evident Envelope. This envelope product indicates whether
it has been opened prior to delivery.
Additional products are in the research and development phase. In collaboration with several large paper manufacturers and various science/anthrax experts, Mail-Well is engaged in a rush research and development effort to incorporate existing biological technologies into new envelope products, such as the following:
-- The Contamination Alert Envelope. This unique envelope product
changes color if it has a biological contaminant inside, or has come
in contact with a biological contaminant.
-- The Antibacterial Envelope. This revolutionary envelope product would
be treated with agents that can kill biological contaminants.
"The U.S. mail is still safe today,'' said Paul Reilly, Mail-Well Chairman, President and CEO. "To put things in perspective, since Sept. 11 the Postal Service has delivered 30 billion pieces of mail and only three contaminated letters have been found. However, we're in the business of selling comfort to our customers. Mail-Well makes more than 135 million envelopes every day, more than anyone in the world. About one in four envelopes received in your home is a Mail-Well envelope. We are part of a $1.3 trillion industry employing more than 9 million people. Our goal is to improve the public's comfort level when opening envelopes. We believe actions being taken by our government and the Envelope Manufacturers Association, together with these innovative product initiatives, will go a long way toward achieving that goal.''
Reilly noted that Mail-Well has received an unprecedented level of interest from customers and others in recent weeks asking what Mail-Well can do to minimize the effect of terrorists' acts involving the U.S. mail system and anthrax.
