Lyra Projects Growth for Laser Printers, Says HP is Undisputed Leader

NEWTONVILLE, Mass.--Oct. 17, 2001-- In a recently published forecast study, Lyra Research projects a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.7 percent for desktop laser printers over the next five years. The report, "Color and Monochrome Desktop Laser Market Forecast,'' anticipates that more than 12 million desktop laser printers will be shipped in 2005.
Larry Jamieson, Senior Consultant at Lyra Research, elaborated on the dynamics of the desktop laser market: "While department and workgroup color segments are growing steadily, personal and work group monochrome segments are declining. The end result is very slight overall market growth. As the desktop laser printer market continues to mature, some smaller vendors will be forced out of the market.''
The report cites Hewlett-Packard as the undisputed king of the desktop laser market, leading every segment in unit placements and market share. "As the leader in desktop monochrome printers since 1984, HP has never faced a serious challenge from other vendors but has noticed slowing growth in the last few quarters and some increasing competition from Lexmark and Brother,'' Jamieson says. "In the first quarter of 2001, HP made a dramatic shift in its personal laser product strategy. With the introduction of the new LaserJet 1200, it doubled its predecessor's speed to l5 ppm while maintaining a $399 price point. Overnight, HP became the price/performance leader in the personal segment. It then followed this with a new price point product with its $249 LaserJet 1000 at 10 ppm.''
