HP Introduces Storage Offerings to Optimize and Control Storage Networks

Press release from the issuing company

PALO ALTO, Calif.---Sept. 10, 2001-- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced software, hardware and services that enable customers to more effectively manage and optimize their network storage environments. These offerings accelerate HP's Federated Storage Area Management (FSAM) strategy to allow customers to manage and scale their storage by a factor of ten without adding additional people. "Data availability is the issue that keeps data center managers up at night,'' said Gill Rickards, general manager, HP Services Storage Support Division. "In response, HP has moved beyond simply relying on redundant technology and repair services to providing support capabilities that anticipate data management needs and deliver superior information access.'' The Software HP OpenView Storage Accountant software enables enterprise customers and service providers to meter storage usage for financial analysis through charge-back and cost recovery. Charge-back allows resources to be used more productively by helping to identify services that are being provided but are not needed. By establishing service levels and tiered pricing, organizations can effectively align network storage use with business value and needs. HP OpenView Storage Allocater v2 software significantly improves the ability to access control between hosts and storage, helping companies get the most out of their investment in people and infrastructure. The software allows customers to remove, reassign or add storage quickly from within a shared pool of multi-vendor JBOD, RAID and tape devices, as well as manage hundreds of host devices, thousands of LUNS and multiple fibre channel fabrics. The software supports Windows 2000 in addition to HP-UX, Solaris and Linux. The Hardware The compact HP Surestore 181GB disk drive provides cost-effective performance and high capacity in a small footprint. For example, the HP Surestore Disk Array XP512 -- when integrated with the HP Surestore 181GB disk drive -- can scale from 37 terabytes (TB) to 93 TB using the same amount of floor space. The HP Surestore Tape Library 10/100, manufactured exclusively by HP, is also extremely scalable, growing from 3.2 TB to 10 TB. The tape library supports fibre channel or SCSI connectivity as well as DLT 8000, Ultrium or SDLT drives. The Services HP's storage services focus on achieving "zero downtime'' and increased performance for HP Surestore products across HP-UX, Solaris, Linux and Windows operating platforms. * HP Premier Storage Critical Support guarantees qualified customers 100 percent data availability and accessibility for the HP Surestore XP disk array family. * HP Storage Critical Support for the HP Surestore XP disk array family, included with this product family, has been expanded to include analysis, design, implementation and testing services; remote monitoring, investigation and resolution of potential problems; and a designated expert storage support team. * HP Storage Support for Virtual Arrays delivers maintenance, technical analysis and change management services to anticipate and meet business information needs. The HP Surestore 181GB disk drive and HP storage support services are expected to be available in September, while the HP OpenView Storage Accountant software and HP OpenView Storage Allocater v2 software are expected to be available in October. The HP Surestore Tape Library 10/100 is expected to be available in November.
