Solution makes tampering detectable via smartphone in real time for easy, reliable authentication.
Blauvelt, NY – Schreiner MediPharm, a leading developer and manufacturer of functional labels for the healthcare industry, received the prestigious Group Award for Innovation in this year’s FINAT Label Competition for a newly developed security seal with an integrated digital authentication function. The award-winning solution enables easy and reliable authentication via smartphone, and enhances the protection of pharmaceutical products along the entire supply chain.
The FINAT Label Competition ranks among the international label industry’s most important competitions. Once a year, the European association of the self-adhesive label industry (FINAT) recognizes outstanding industry solutions. With the Group Award for Innovation, the judging panel honored a development by Schreiner MediPharm that smartly combines several security functions in a single solution: a covert digital authentication feature, a clear first-opening indication, and a special guilloche as an additional overt authenticity feature. The highly transparent and sustainable security seal was developed specifically for pharmaceutical secondary packaging, and offers enhanced protection in the fight against counterfeiting, tampering attempts, and illegal exchange of pharmaceutical products.
Digital Authentication via Smartphone
Integration of the digital authentication technology Cryptoglyph® by AlpVision is the core of the solution. The Swiss company is one of the leading providers of digital authentication technologies, and supports manufacturers of brand products worldwide in protecting their products against counterfeiting.
With high precision, Schreiner MediPharm prints the unique security feature – which is invisible to the human eye – into the seal’s transparent area. Its authenticity can be verified with a smartphone app at any time. If the seal has been tampered with and supposedly closed again by means of adhesive tape, the digital feature is no longer readable. As a result, tampering attempts are quickly and reliably detectable.
More Security Along the Supply Chain
Pharmaceutical manufacturers benefit from the combination of ease of use and a high level of protection. Stakeholders along the supply chain such as brand inspectors, distributors, or customs authorities can perform checks fast and in real time using a standard smartphone. The verification data can be monitored by the brand owner and used for detecting fraud attempts, geotracking, or market analyses. At the same time, security cuts integrated in the seal, a specially adapted adhesive, a complex guilloche pattern and the seal’s unique curved shape provide additional tamper protection. Importantly, the solution fulfills the requirements of EU Falsified Medicines Directive and DIN EN 16679:2014 for tamper-proof packaging.
