(West Hartford, Conn.) - Matik is proud to announce that O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc., one of the oldest continuously operating firearms manufacturers in the United States, has implemented SEI Laser’s FLEXI Guns laser engraving system to etch decorative and functional patterns into wood shotgun stocks at its Texas manufacturing operation.
Installed in late 2023, the system represents the first FLEXI Guns installation in North America, marking an important milestone for both Mossberg and SEI Laser.
Mossberg evaluated the FLEXI Guns system as part of an initiative to improve engraving consistency, production speed, and overall process reliability when compared to traditional CNC-based engraving methods. Etching quality was a primary concern during the evaluation process, particularly the ability to achieve clean, repeatable patterns on natural wood materials, which can vary significantly in grain, density, and moisture content.
According to Mossberg, the FLEXI Guns system delivered high-quality, consistent engraving results that met stringent aesthetic and functional requirements for shotgun stocks. In addition to quality improvements, Mossberg reported that engraving speeds significantly exceeded those of conventional CNC machines, enabling higher throughput without compromising detail or precision.
The laser-based process also reduced mechanical contact with the wood surface, helping minimize tool wear, maintenance requirements, and variability associated with cutting tools. Since commissioning, the system has demonstrated strong operational reliability, supporting Mossberg’s production demands in a manufacturing environment where uptime and repeatability are critical.
“The FLEXI Guns platform has proven to be a robust and efficient solution for engraving wood firearm stocks,” said Brian Stach, vice president of manufacturing at Mossberg. “The system addressed our concerns around engraving quality while delivering a notable improvement in speed and overall process stability.”
SEI Laser’s FLEXI Guns system is specifically engineered for firearms applications, including engraving, marking and texturing of various wood components of handguns and shotguns. The system combines high-precision laser technology with industrial automation to support demanding production environments.
This installation underscores Mossberg’s continued investment in advanced manufacturing technologies and highlights the growing role of laser processing in firearm component finishing.
