Study details the challenges and opportunities of this exploding growth opportunity; updates 2023 study and shows rapidly evolving market; complementary webinar scheduled for June 24

Taktiful, the Digital Embellishment Experts, teamed with WhatTheyThink to conduct a new study of digital embellishment use. The goal of The 2025 Digital Embellishments Study was to find out more about how print service providers are using digital embellishments. The results of this study provide insights into the size of the embellishment market and identify areas for improvement as well as further market opportunities for vendors and print providers alike that will help grow this segment of the industry. This study is a followup to the Taktiful/WhatTheyThink 2023 Specialty Digital Ink and Toner Embellishment Study, which looked solely at the use of specialty inks and toners for digital presses. The new study expands the scope of inquiry to include all kinds of digital embellishments, and comparisons to the 2023 results show how the market is rapidly evolving.

The study takes a deep dive into how current users of digital embellishment technologies are utilizing them, what the response from customers has been, how satisfied print providers have been with the sales and profitability of these jobs, where the challenges lie, and their general feelings about the future of digital embellishments.

Among the findings:

  • 54% of survey respondents said that the main reason they added digital embellishment capabilities was to generate more profit.
  • 88% of respondents said that clients are interested in digital embellishment capabilities.
  • Two-thirds of respondents (65%) are satisfied with the profits they make off digital embellishment jobs, but only 37% are satisfied with the sales of these of these jobs.
  • 35% said that digital embellishment jobs were “always” more profitable than regular CMYK jobs, while 44% said they “usually” are more profitable than regular CMYK jobs.

The report also looks at how users are implementing—and selling—these embellishment technologies, as well as where the challenges in implementing and selling them effectively lie. Also included is a “conclusions and recommendations” section offering advice for printers, vendors, and others in the printing industry.

The report can be purchased at the WhatTheyThink Store. Site licenses, as well as packages including customized data cuts, slide decks, and other resources are also available.

Topline results from the study will be presented in a WhatTheyThink LunchNLearn webinar scheduled for June 24 at 1 pm ET. Register here.
