GraphicEd.org publishes detailed Study of Prepress Operator Roles, Salaries, and Skills based on industry career data
Toronto, Canada—GraphicEd.org, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing education in the graphic arts, has released a new whitepaper titled “From Pixels to Presses: Career Statistics and Opportunities in Modern Prepress Departments.” The study provides unprecedented insight into the current state of prepress employment across Ontario’s $3.8 billion print and packaging sector.
Drawing on extensive data collected from prepress related job postings, the research identifies key hiring trends, salary expectations, and the evolving skills employers are actively seeking from today’s prepress professionals. It also highlights the growing complexity of hybrid roles that combine traditional prepress responsibilities with graphic design needs, structural packaging skills, and even digital press operation.
“The role of prepress has always been essential, but is often left underexamined,” said Lee Eldridge, the lead researcher on the project and an educator at Toronto Metropolitan University. “This report sheds light on where the field is headed and where both employers and job seekers need to adapt to stay competitive.”
Key findings Included in the Report
• Current salary averages based on role and experience in Prepress Departments.
• Increasingly common demand for hybrid roles - such as Prepress + Graphic Design or Prepress + Machine Operation – and the associated compensation of those roles.
• Confirmation of core competencies like preflighting, proofing, and quality assurance remaining vital and sought after by employers, while surprisingly few postings mention specialized prepress-associated skills such as colour management or variable data printing.
• How workflow automation and “user-friendly design tools” (e.g., Canva) are reshaping job demands in prepress departments, creating new challenges and opportunities for specialists.
The report is aimed at industry leaders, department managers, educators, and career professionals, offering strategic recommendations for building workforce resilience and future-proofing prepress departments through targeted upskilling, mentorship, and workflow clarity.
