San Luis Obispo, CA. – Two weeks after attending Dscoop Edge in Long Beach, students from Cal Poly's Graphic Communication Department are still buzzing with inspiration, ideas, and the future in the print and digital media industries. What started as a trip for students' professional development later became something much more impactful.
Over twenty students and three faculty members, sponsored by Dscoop, had the opportunity to attend the conference and network with professionals shaping the future, as well as experience cutting-edge technology that makes printed media an effective channel for communication and interaction.
Through keynotes, technology demonstrations, and personal dialogues, students gained insight into the advanced digital printing sector, which is enthusiastically adopting AI, automation, tailored services, and sustainable practices. For many student attendees, it was the first time they saw how technologies like personalization, predictive analytics, and AI-enhanced workflows are not just theoretical, but in action, are scalable, and already changing how companies operate.
"It was such an incredible experience meeting so many passionate individuals in the field and connecting with Cal Poly alumni!" said Zoe Li, one of the student attendees. "The keynote sessions provided fresh perspectives on fostering a strong workplace culture, the evolving integration of AI in print technologies, and upcoming economic trends. I also appreciated the insight of how the industry has been evolving in the face of current global, economic, and social changes, of its shift towards sustainability, from print to a service rather than a product, and from simply sharing information to creating meaningful experiences."
The experience also helped students understand how their education in design, production technologies, and user-centered communication fits into a much larger ecosystem. Through conversations with CEOs, industry leaders, and Cal Poly alums, as well as insights from many other professionals, students learned about the broad range of career paths available to them and the skills that will set them apart.
This opportunity was made possible through the generous support of Dscoop and sponsor companies, which recognize the value of investing in the next generation of talent. The students especially appreciate the number of industry professionals who took the time to connect with them, not just to discuss careers but to share advice, offer mentorship, and encouragement.
As the industry rapidly evolves through technological advancements and shifting workforce needs, it is clearer than ever that students are not just future employees; they are future leaders, creators, and problem solvers. Events like Dscoop Edge help bridge the gap between education and employment while reinforcing how community and collaboration drive progress.
"We are incredibly proud of our students who are curious, show up with professionalism, and a willingness to learn," said Dr. Xiaoying Rong, Interim Department Chair. "This experience not only exposed them to advanced technologies but also empowered them to view themselves as active contributors in an industry that is rapidly evolving."
Cal Poly Graphic Communication extends sincere thanks to Dscoop and many individuals and organizations who helped make this experience possible. Your investment in our students is an investment in the future of the printing industry and the graphic communication field.
