Zeus Packaging Announces Completion of 2023 Carbon Emissions Report and Commitment to Net Zero by 2050

Press release from the issuing company

Zeus Packaging is thrilled to announce the completion of their 2023 Carbon Emissions Report, marking a significant milestone in their journey towards achieving net zero emissions. This comprehensive report, with 2023 as their base year, offers an in-depth analysis of their carbon footprint and sets a solid foundation for their future sustainability initiatives.

Understanding Carbon Emissions and Scopes

Carbon emissions refer to the release of carbon dioxide (CO?) and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere, primarily from burning fossil fuels, industrial processes, and deforestation. These emissions are major contributors to global warming and climate change.

Emissions are categorised into three scopes:

Scope 1: Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, such as company vehicles and facilities.

Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling consumed by the company.

Scope 3: All other indirect emissions that occur in the value chain of the company, including both upstream and downstream emissions.

A carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organisation, event, or product, typically measured in units of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO?e).

2023 Carbon Footprint

For the year 2023, Zeus’s total carbon emissions amounted to 198,000 tCO?e, broken down as follows:

Scope 1: 2.9 ktCO?e
Scope 2: 4.9 ktCO?e
Scope 3: 190 ktCO?e

With an average of 107 tCO?e per employee, their emissions are on par with other companies in the wrapping and packaging sector. This benchmarking allows them to understand their position and identify opportunities for improvement.

Net Zero Commitment

Net zero means achieving a balance between the greenhouse gases emitted and those removed from the atmosphere, through both emission reductions and carbon offset projects.

This report marks the beginning of their journey towards net zero, with 2023 as their baseline. Their comprehensive analysis of their operations and supply chain will guide their efforts to reduce emissions and enhance sustainability.

Steps Forward

Their ultimate goal is to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, a commitment publicly affirmed through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This initial report provides detailed insights into their Scope 1 and 2 emissions, with ongoing efforts to refine their Scope 3 emissions data.

Immediate Actions

Scope 1: Transitioning their fleet from diesel to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and introducing hybrid and electric vehicles for their sales representatives.

Scope 2: Investigating Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (CPPAs) to secure certified renewable energy and exploring the use of solar panels.

Scope 3: Refining their supplier database to better understand their supply chain and identify areas for emissions reductions.
By taking these steps, they are not only addressing their own carbon footprint but also paving the way for a more sustainable future in their industry.

Quote from Declan Breen – Head of Sustainability

"This report is a significant milestone for us, demonstrating our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and leading the way towards a more sustainable future. Our efforts to transition our fleet to more sustainable options and secure renewable energy sources are just the beginning. By setting a strong example, we hope to inspire others in our industry to follow suit. Together, we can make a substantial impact on combating climate change.
