Partnership Supports Increasing Demands for Sustainable Plastic Cards

PARSIPPANY, N.J., U.S.A. – Ahead of ICMA EXPO 2024, Sun Chemical and adhesive tape manufacturer, Lohmann, have formed a partnership designed to help plastic and laminated card manufacturers achieve their sustainability goals.

The partnership aims to support increasing industry demands for more sustainable products, including the elimination of virgin PVC substrates for banking cards by instead using recycled PVC, PLA or other bio-based plastics and alternative materials that do not harm the environment.

“We’re seeing customers already making the switch to recycled or bio-based plastic solutions for their plastic cards, but when you switch substrates, the bonding requirements for tapes change and the old solutions that worked for virgin PVC are no longer as effective on these alternate substrates,” said Mike Jackson, International Sales Manager, Product Manager Tape Solutions, Sun Chemical. “Lohmann offers a solution to that challenge, ensuring that tapes on plastic cards bond properly and effectively. Our partnership with Lohmann will allow us to deliver more sustainable solutions to our customers while maintaining the highest standard of quality for the plastic card industry.”

Lohmann offers an extensive selection of low-emission, double-sided pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes and reactive adhesive films that contain age-resistant and chemical-resistant properties for various substrates. For the financial card market, Lohmann has developed new chip bonding tape suitable for the next generation of banking cards.

During ICMA EXPO, Sun Chemical’s Security Solutions division will display its full range of products for credit and laminated cards at booth #514, including: pre-laid overlays, pre-patched holograms, magnetic tapes, standard finishes and engraved lamination plates, screen and offset inks, security applications and electronic materials.

Visitors to the booth will learn about Sun Chemical’s standard, color and printed magnetic tapes that have been supplied to the global financial sector for over four decades. Durable, reliable and of the highest quality, Sun Chemical’s magnetic tapes have high resolution and low noise with exact wave form.

Included in this portfolio are UV screen inks for plastic cards and offset UV plastic card inks which are designed with high bond strength, superior printability and heat-resistant colors, exclusively for plastic cards. These inks adhere well to lamination, have consistent color reproduction and can be customized to provide a wide range of metallic finishes.
