G. M. Gillespie Named to Lead Westvaco Packaging Resources Group

Press release from the issuing company

NEW YORK--June 21, 2001--Gilbert M. Gillespie, Westvaco Senior Vice President, will assume leadership of the company's Packaging Resources Group with overall responsibility for paperboard operations, including manufacturing, marketing and sales activities, effective November 1, 2001. Mr. Gillespie will replace David E. McIntyre, Senior Vice President and Packaging Resources Group Vice President, who will retire at that time. In the interim, Mr. Gillespie will work closely with Dr. McIntyre to ensure an effective transition. "Dave has done an outstanding job leading the businesses that we combined in late 1999 to intensify our focus on growing worldwide markets for packaging,'' said John A. Luke, Jr., Chairman and CEO. "We are fortunate to have someone with Gil's strengths to succeed him. Gil helped lead the strategic review that led to our new structure for packaging operations and has nearly 40 years of experience in Westvaco's U.S. and international packaging businesses.'' Since October 2000, Mr. Gillespie has served on special assignment as Enterprise Human Resources Operations Manager where he has implemented a new operating model for the company's human resources function. In November 1999, he was named Manager of Primary Operations for the Packaging Resources Group. This assignment followed his November 1998 election as Senior Vice President and promotion to Manager of the company's former Kraft Division. Mr. Gillespie joined Westvaco in 1963 and later served in a wide variety of management positions in the former Kraft and Container Divisions, as was well as Rigesa, Ltda., Westvaco's Brazilian packaging subsidiary. He was elected Vice President in 1990 and promoted to Container Division Manager. He held that post until he returned to the Kraft Division in 1994 where he oversaw sales, marketing and customer service before being named Assistant Division Manager in 1998. Dr. McIntyre has led Westvaco's Packaging Resources Group since it was formed in late 1999. He was elected Senior Vice President in July 1998 when he assumed responsibility for Westvaco's research and engineering activities. He originally joined Westvaco in 1968 in the company's Corporate Research Department and was promoted to a paper mill manufacturing position before leaving the company in 1972. Dr. McIntyre subsequently served in increasingly responsible capacities with other paper companies and operated a private consulting business. Dr. McIntyre rejoined Westvaco in 1996 as Vice President and Assistant Manager of the Fine Papers Division.
