Printed matter and white packaging are valuable raw materials for deinkers

What will we make paper from in the future? Paper for recycling is becoming increasingly scarce. More and more people are reading fewer and fewer newspapers; many believe that information from the internet is sustainable – despite the immense climate-damaging electricity consumption. Paper is sustainable, paper protects the climate, and yet it is in short supply. And the paper collection today returns almost only packaging. At the INGEDE Symposium on 13 March 2024, everything will once again revolve around the fibre supply of the future: Which alternative fibres can we use? For what? How can fibre-based packaging be recycled? Which barriers are recycling-friendly? How is the market for recovered paper developing regionally and globally?

These issues are also at the centre of the presentation by Arne Kant, Senior Principal at AFRY Management Consulting GmbH in Munich. As a "wake-up call" in the morning, Anne-Katrin Kohlmorgen (Two Sides Germany) will talk about myths, facts and opinions on the topic of print as an environmental sinner and the digital "clean world"? Speaking of clean: beige is the new green! Does sanitary paper always have to be white? Stefan Finke (WEPA) presents the first premium-quality recycled tissue paper made from packaging board and the change in the raw material spectrum for towel and toilet paper or kitchen rolls.

The European Commission presented its proposals for an EU packaging regulation already at the end of 2022. But how the reduction of packaging and the improvement of recyclability are to be achieved is still subject of controversial debates. Ulrich Leberle (Cepi, Brussels) answers the question: How does the Commission's proposal affect the recycling industry, especially deinkers? Jürgen Dornheim (Director Corporate Packaging Innovation & Sustainability at Procter & Gamble) will explain the requirements of users of fibre-based packaging. A series of other presentations will deal with the sorting of paper for recycling, the tracking of bales and impurities – not only during sorting – and test methods for recyclability.
