GATF Offers Six New Workshops in 2001

Press release from the issuing company

Pittsburgh, Pa., May 14, 2001- Providing hands-on-training for the industry for 65 years, the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (GATF) will offer six new workshops in 2001. Designed for different audiences, two workshops delve into the hot issue of digital ads. Prepress for Digital Ads, a three-day workshop, teaches prepress personnel what to do with the ads upon receipt. Topics included how to check incoming digital ad files and how to convert the files to CTP production. Publishers: Doin' Digital, a two-day workshop, addresses needs of publishing personnel such as ad production managers and graphic production coordinators. Topics include defining digital ad specifications for the publishing company, communicating requirements to designers, and determining if the company's printer is ready to receive digital ads. Frank Scott, GATF's vice president and director of the research group, will host the workshop. Prior to joining GATF, Mr. Scott was responsible for identifying and implementing new technologies to be used in the production and transmission of pages produced for New York-based magazines. These two workshops will debut in early summer. GATF expands its technical training of color management to include the five-day workshop Color Management for the Pressroom. Topics will cover whether or not to profile a press, how far to take process control, how to measure the results of a pressrun, and how to apply a CTP correction curve. Attendees will be asked to match closely as possible their production workflow from a list of scenarios and follow best practices that are presented for each scenario. Don Hutcheson and Frank Gualtieri will co-host this workshop. Mr. Hutcheson, a graphic arts consultant specializing in the development and installation of color management systems, also leads GATF's introductory Implementing Color Management workshop. Mr. Gualtieri, a GATF senior technical consultant, has conducted more than 300 technical plant assessments for a variety of printers and leads two GATF advanced sheetfed workshops. Color Management for the Pressroom will be offered June 18-22, 2001 and October 1-5, 2001. Attendees are trained to control the process through the entire print production cycle-from prepress, proofing, and platemaking to pressroom operations-during the intensive two-day Process Controls Boot Camp. Because process control is most effective when every department is involved, this is a workshop for everyone and anyone who works in and around color lithography. Dan Remaley will lead this training drill with a host of other GATF specialists. Mr. Remaley, a GATF photomechanical imaging specialist, presents seminars on process controls across the nation. Process Controls Boot Camp will be presented June 6-7, 2001 and November 28-29, 2001. Two more workshops, Supervising the Lithographic Press and Troubleshooting Binding and Finishing Problems, are currently being developed and will be presented at GATF this year. For more information about these workshops or any GATF workshop, contact Sara Hantz, GATF workshop coordinator, by phoning 800/910-GATF ext. 113 or emailing [email protected].
