3/15/01 (WhatTheyThink) John Warnock, co-founder and chairman of Adobe announced that he will be retiring effective today. According to the company, he will remain as chairman of the board with co-founder Charles Geschke. Many expected such a move after the company announced the rise of Bruce Chizen to CEO at the end of last year. A source inside the company said the move had been "planned and orchestrated for a while" as Warnock expressed interest in other areas including philanthropy. In December, Warnock moved to a created position of Chief Technology Officer. A source inside the company said Warnock thought the job would provide "flexibility" but said it required much of his time. The source said Warnock continued to be very active even in the CTO position. Kevin Burr, Vice President of Corporate Communications for Adobe, told WhatTheyThink that the CTO position will not be filled. "We have promoted Shantanu Narayen to Executive VP of Worldwide Product Marketing and Development. Shantanu will be in charge of product engineering and marketing for our products." According to a release from the company, Warnock said he was confident with Adobe's management team. Geschke, who retired last year, said he was pleased with Warnock's decision. "We have worked together for the past 23 years and I'm looking forward to enjoying some leisure time with him away from the office."
