Coalition will create technical specifications to provide publishers, creators and consumers the ability to trace the origin of different types of media.

The Association for PRINT Technologies (APTech) is delighted to support the recently developed Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), announced February 22, 2021. The coalition was established to address the prevalence of disinformation, misinformation and online content fraud by developing technical standards for certifying the source and history or provenance of media content. As a much-respected technical standards organization, APTech will serve as the administrator of the C2PA technical working group(s). These groups will include industry experts who will write the requirements and workflows for technical specifications.

Coalition founding partners Adobe, Arm, BBC, Intel, Microsoft and Truepic seek to establish a standardized provenance solution with the overarching goal of combating misleading content. The formation of the C2PA brings together the efforts of the founding members of the Adobe-led Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) and the Microsoft- and BBC-led Project Origin, unifying technical specifications under a single entity.

The CAI is building a system to provide provenance and history for digital media, ultimately ensuring transparency and trust for customers and users. Project Origin has its roots in the production and distribution of news, including so-called “fake news.” With the foundation of the C2PA, technical standards will be unified while these two entities continue to pursue adoption, prototyping and education within their respective communities.

As a formal coalition for standards development, the C2PA adopts this mission under the auspices of the Linux Foundation via the Joint Development Foundation (JDF) project structure.

The consortium’s steering committee will approve the formation and planned activities of technical working groups.

In addition to identifying target industries, establishing technical working groups and working with partner organizations as appropriate, the Steering Committee will develop guidelines that address issues pertinent to the use of content provenance methods.
