Rebirth of Flexo: Part 2...Can This Type of Effort Translate to Other Analog Printing Technologies?

In Part 1 of this series, we looked at what the disruption the “Rebirth of Flexo” is causing and could continue to cause in packaging production. In this article, we will look at a very creative example of what digital technology can do to take conventional printing technology, give it new life, and make it very competitive against new digital printing technologies, specifically production inkjet.

REVO is collaborative brand association between leading packaging equipment and consumables manufacturers. REVO stands for Digital Flexo REVOlution. In their own words, “REVO is a team of leading companies in the labels and packaging industry promoting a new manufacturing solution to create Digital Flexo Printing by digitalizing the flexo process.” The REVO partners include apex international, AVT, Bobst, Dupont, Esko, FlintGroup, SaicaFlex, storaenso, UPM, and X-rite Pantone. It is an interesting mix of collaborators, including an international packaging converter. This collaboration started in 2013 and is starting to excite the packaging value chain. From a brand owner’s perspective, it offers lower cost, high-quality imaging, and color control combined with high productivity and on-demand packaging, in comparison to production inkjet.
