The US Postal Service is reorganizing in an effort to drive revenue and achieve long-term business objectives. Earlier this year, the USPS released a 10-year business plan that laid out several strategies to help it address declining mail volumes and revenues. The USPS is in the process of trying to gain support from Congress for some of the plan’s cost-cutting and revenue-driving strategies. The realignments within the USPS’ mailing and shipping services organization this week represent key areas of revenue growth, said Postmaster General John Potter, in a statement. The new internal structure will result in more competitive package products and scanning visibility information for customers, he continued. A new group has been formed, the Product Visibility and Operational Performance group, which will focus on operation performance, product intelligence and technology development. As VP of the group, Jim Cochrane will lead the development of innovations in scanning technologies and tracking systems, including the Intelligent Mail barcode, and the implementation of product scanning improvements. Cochrane, who was previously VP of Ground Shipping, will report to the SVP, intelligent mail and address quality. In another move, the expedited shipping and ground shipping groups have merged into a single shipping services group within the mailing and shipping services organization. Gary Reblin, who will lead the new group, will be responsible for all shipping products and services and customer service improvements, including product solutions, marketing, promotions and revenue in both market dominant and competitive product classifications. Reblin previously was VP of Expedited Shipping for the Postal Service, responsible for Express Mail and Priority Mail products. Prior to that, he led the Postal Service’s efforts to develop the Intelligent Mail barcode as manager of Intelligent Mail Planning and Standards.
