David Lewis was the founder of Premiere Graphics, a computer software development company, where he created DeScipher - one of the very first links between Scitex systems and the Macintosh. Later he merged Premiere with Screaming Color, a leading Midwest prepress house, to form Screaming Technology, Inc., and renamed the product to RIPLINK - the best selling desktop to CEPS linking product in the world. After Screaming Technology was purchased by Ultimate Technographics, David became the VP of Development for Ultimate. In that capacity, he oversaw the development of such products as Trapeze, and later worked to integrate the trapping engine in Trapeze into the Linotype/Hell Delta Rip as the Delta Trapper. Lucid Dream Software, Inc. is an Illinois-based corporation that has been providing industry-leading market-specific software solutions to the pre-press and printing industries for over four years. Lucid offers the Heidelberg Delta RIP users the most comprehensive ROOM workflow additions currently available on the market. These include: conversion tools for Delta jobs to industry-standard formats (Tiff/IT, PDF/X, and DCS2); connectivity tools for image-setters and plate-setters via PRINTflow, and DuPont's color printers via CROMAflow; as well OnTimeProof - the highest standard web-based soft proofing device. PRINT 01, What plans do you have overall for the show? Lucid Dream is introducing two new products and announcing a major addition to our technical staff at Print 01.  The software solutions, which are available now, are being exhibited at Heidelberg's booth #1000A. What is OnTimeProof? OnTimeProof is a fully integrated system for Heidelberg's Delta Rip that seamlessly and automatically extends the ROOM workflow to the world of remote virtual proofing. It gives Heidelberg Delta RIP users a solution that converts ripped Delta Documents to composite/separated JPEG and low resolution (up to 400 dpi) PDF file formats, and manages a Web-based interface for notifying, delivering and managing the remote proofing process. What are the advantages of OnTimeProof specifically for Delta customers? OnTimeProof makes it possible for Delta users to automatically do database-managed, online remote virtual proofing from their ripped Delta List files. Delta users can now send ripped, trapped jobs for almost instantaneous virtual proofing to any facility with Web browser capabilities. With OnTimeProof, job numbers are entered into the system using a Web browser and administrative logins. The job numbers are then assigned to customer accounts. Once job numbers are assigned, the jobs are sent for normal Delta production. Lucid's unique and specialized pixel-based conversion takes data straight from the ripped and trapped Delta List and converts it into common Web file formats for easy viewing using standard tools. Each job processed using the Delta RIP is queried to see if a remote proof needs to be sent to the customer. If the job ticket number indicates that a virtual proof is required, OnTimeProof creates a composite/separated JPEG and a low resolution (up to 400 dpi) PDF file. These files are then sent to the Web server and logged into the database for availability over the Internet, an e-mail message is automatically sent to customers notifying them that the files are ready for remote access. Customers can then view jobs, make annotations, and send notes and attachments. The notes and attachments Creating PDF files from Delta List files - you will show a solution, right? PDFflow extends the ROOM workflow to the PDF world, making it possible for Delta users to create PDF files from ripped Delta List files for the first time. With PDFflow, Delta users can send their ripped, trapped jobs to PDF-based workflows such as Prinergy or Apogee. When combined with our TIFF/ITflow and DCSflow software solutions, PDFflow makes the perfect addition for a Delta digital ad distribution toolkit. Wouldn’t there still be traditional issues with fonts, missing overprints and general size of the files? PDFflow takes data straight from the Delta List and converts the job into Adobe's  PDF 1.3 file format. Spot colors are correctly converted to DeviceN color space in the PDF, allowing for correct composite or separated output of the PDF, as well as correct preview in Acrobat 4.0 or later. In addition, Delta trapping may be included or removed during PDF creation. The PDF is raster PDF, so there are no issues with missing fonts, overprints disappearing, or incorrectly rendered objects. Our special coding technique substantially reduces file size compared to full resolution PDFs created from Delta by our competitors, while using completely lossless compression. The resulting PDF file fully conforms to the 1.3 specification, with no Acrobat plug-ins or proprietary software needed to view or output the files. Last week, you announced that Jim Kennish would lead your tech efforts. What does this appointment mean for Lucid Dream’s customers? The Total Label Issue

The Total Label Issue

This issue of the WhatTheyThink Quarterly is all about labels, which are seen as a high-growth part of commercial printing, driven by e-commerce, food/beverage demand, and regulations. The market has surpassed 1.2 trillion square meters of label production volume per year, and is moving toward high-mix, low-waste production rather than only high-volume throughput. While flexo is still used for high-volume label production, digital label printing often complements it—or in some cases replaces it. But labels are about more than printing technology. Read More
