Inkjet is a very precise business, but it’s hard to bring that level of precision to reporting on specific installations. There are some companies and OEMs that announce a sale before it is even installed (and hopefully it is actually installed!) while others may wait a year or more before announcing an installation. Some companies never give permission to talk about their inkjet choices! We have tracked around 1,900 inkjet press installations at approximately 1,600 companies over the past 5 years. Note that Inkjet Insight only began tracking installations of packaging, textile and other non-document segment presses in the past 18 months. Through the end of June we had rounded up 106 installations to report. At the half year point we decided to take a look back at the data and verify how many were actually installed in 2023, versus installed previously and made public in 2023.
Between January and June 2023, we verified 58 press installations at 55 companies. While the trend we had been seeing for press formats was sheet-fed edging out roll-fed, over the first 6 months of 2023 we found a few more roll-fed (30) than sheet-fed (28) presses to report. It was also interesting to see that almost 15% of the continuous presses were 3-up or wider and a little over 25% were label presses. Back on the sheet-fed side, in 2022 B3 was by far the most common sheet-fed format, but for this period we saw 10 B1, 8 B2 and 10 B3. The B1 presses represent a hefty investment which suggest a more robust equipment investment environment than interest rates might lead one to believe.
[restrict paid="true"] Presses installed to deliver application output for the document space represented about 70% of press installations. Within those installations, there is a lot of cross over between different types of document applications like books, commercial print, direct mail, and display but some also note packaging too. For several years, we have seen the majority of inkjet installations in the document market serving more than one subsegment. For labels and packaging, presses are likely to be built-to-purpose for corrugated, folding carton, flexible packaging or labels.
See Table 1 below for a comparison of format and OEM data for presses that were installed in 2023 as compared to all installations reported in 2023. Canon, HP and Screen were the only OEMs for whom we were able to find more than 10 installations reported, Canon was the only one with more than 10 reported as installed in calendar 2023 representing mostly iX series presses plus several of the ColorStream 8000 line. We also included Canon’s report of the ProStream 3000 installation in South Korea for which we can’t find the “For You” company website (possibly because it’s only listed in Korean). It’s interesting to note that Screen has had a great run of installation announcements around their inkjet label line. Out of 18 Screen installations reported, 11 were for label presses. Screen dominated the reporting in the label segment. HP also made it into the 10+ club for the overall 2023 reporting with about half the volume represented by their latest PageWide Advantage 2200.
