The attention for December shifted back to Europe. We are reporting on 17 press installations with 12 of them in Europe as compared to November where 12 of 19 presses were installed in the US. The European activity included Austria, Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Screen reported installation of a Truepress L350 SAI LM in Europe at label producer Elep. Three press installations were reported in the US as well as one each in China and Martinique.

We also noted some re-announcements of press installations previously publicized. In some cases, it was just that – a new push of an old story. In other cases, like that of Atta45 in Sweden, a press that was purchased in a prior year (and reported by us back in February) was only recently installed due to pandemic and supply chain delays.

We have now seen sheetfed installs more widely reported than webfed installs for the sixth month in a row. We found reports of 11 sheet-fed presses (4 B2 and 7 B3) and 6 web-fed (5 2-up roll and 1 narrow web.) Four of the presses used UV inks and the remainder were aqueous.

There were a lot of different application types represented and there appear to be fewer than usual multi-segment installs. Only two companies clearly stated that they were using the press for more than one type of production. The main focus was commercial printing with 5 installations followed by 3 each producing direct mail and/or books as well as 3 in-plant operations. Some interesting “onesies” were installs producing yearbooks, photo specialty, newspapers* and also individual installations for corrugated packaging and labels.

OEMs by the numbers for December (based on public reports): 9 Canon presses (again), 3 Konica Minolta, 2 Xerox and one each for HP, Kodak, Screen.
