For September, we became aware of six new inkjet installations, four in the U.S. and one each in Germany and France. In August, all of the activity reported was from the U.S. and Canada. We are seeing the trend since July of more sheet-fed activity than web-fed continue in September.

Our report includes five sheet-fed presses, with four of them A3/B3 format and one of the big, B1 sized presses. Based on what we have pulled so far for next month, I expect the sheet-fed trend to continue and perhaps strengthen. Other than the B1 formats, these presses are considerably less expensive than their web-fed counterparts and therefore more accessible to a wider range of buyers.

In terms of the range of buyers, two of the September sheet-fed installs went to In-Plant operations who often find the flexibility of the multi-stock compatible, B3 format the most flexible for their needs. In this case, one selected the Canon iX3200 and the other installed a Xerox Baltoro. Note that the Baltoro installation at The Institutes was from 2021 but only recently reported. The company is a long-time Xerox customer starting with the iGen, then trying the (short-lived) Brenva before transitioning to the more widely installed Baltoro.

Other than one corrugated packaging installation of an EFI Nozomi C14000 at Carlisle Container Company, most of the other inkjet sites are delivering a range of application types on their presses. Applications reported include general commercial, direct mail, magazines, catalogs, books and even some bills and statements on the same press producing higher coverage applications. This ability to do more than one thing efficiently and effectively on a single press is becoming the hallmark of the new presses with the widest up-take. This applies to presses at both ends of the price scale.
