InstantStart UV from Heidelberg boosts productivity in UV printing by up to 25%
Press release from the issuing company
October 28, 2003 -- Heidelberg is unveiling its new InstantStart UV product. This is a combination of hardware, software and services that can increase the productivity of a UV press by up to 25 percent. Working closely with the Berufsgenossenschaft Druck und Papierverarbeitung – the German Statutory Accident Prevention, Rehabilitation and Compensation Institute in the Printing and Paper Industry – Heidelberg has been able to cut washup solution emissions on its presses to such an extent that, in future, there will be no waiting times at all before and after washing the blankets if the correct washup solution and dryer are used.
Since many UV printers need to wash their blankets once or twice every hour, InstantStart UV boosts productivity by an average of up to 25 percent. InstantStart UV also protects the UV lamps and prolongs their service lives since they no longer need to be switched off during the washup process.
Heidelberg is currently the only supplier able to eliminate waiting times for washing in UV printing applications. UV customers can turn this increased productivity into a clear competitive advantage.
Up to eight minutes saved for each washup operation InstantStart UV can be used to wash blankets on the Speedmaster SM 52, CD 74 and CD 102 in UV mode without waiting times. The UV dryers can also remain in standby mode during washing. Production can then resume immediately. In the past, it has been necessary for safety reasons to wait before washing in order to give the dryers time to cool down and then to wait again after washing in order to enable the emissions to escape. This is no longer necessary. Nor is there any need to wait to restart the dryers that have been deactivated. The overall result is a decrease in washup time by eight minutes. What’s more, the washup and waiting time for the impression cylinders has also been reduced.
Hardware, software and services
InstantStart UV is enabled in the form of a software license. Heidelberg’s service technicians will first perform the necessary changes to the press in advance. In order to use InstantStart UV, a DryStar UV dryer from Heidelberg or UV dryer from IST Metz GmbH will be needed. These dryers must have a CANopen link. Furthermore, the press may only use AIII cleaning solutions with a flame point in excess of 55 °C, high boilers or vegetable oil based cleaning solutions. Heidelberg presses have long since been optimized for use with these solutions.
