Denver, CO – Colorado Community Media, a newly launched print site under the ownership of the National Trust for Local News, has chosen ProImage’s NewsWayX cloud-based workflow to manage production at its recently opened Trust Press facility in Denver. The new operation prints 23 weekly newspapers for Colorado Community Media along with five additional titles for outside clients—and is already poised for growth with more publications on the horizon.
As the team at Trust Press prepared to bring the site online, they turned to trusted partners and proven technology to build a reliable and future-ready production infrastructure. Their equipment acquisition included a four-tower DGM 430 press with SSC folder, sourced and installed with support from industry leader imPRESSions Worldwide. Just as critical to the launch, however, was the selection of a powerful and intuitive prepress workflow system. For this, Colorado Community Media chose ProImage’s NewsWayX cloud solution.
A Robust, Scalable, and Cloud-Hosted Workflow
NewsWayX is ProImage’s latest-generation workflow software, designed to streamline page processing, imposition, ripping, and output across newspaper and commercial print environments. With full HTML5 browser-based access and no need for on-premise servers or IT maintenance, it was the ideal choice for a fast-moving, startup print operation like Trust Press. “We wanted a system that could scale as we grow, automate our prepress operations, and not require in-house IT resources,” said Production Director Kevin Smalley. “The NewsWayX subscription model means our software stays up to date, we don’t have to manage servers, and the platform easily handles the growing number of publications we plan to add.”
Experienced Staff, Familiar Technology, Easy Implementation
A key factor in the decision was the arrival of Prepress Manager Tony Harris, who brought 20 years of hands-on experience with NewsWayX to the new operation. “Because of that experience, and because NewsWayX shares much of the same DNA as earlier versions I’ve worked with, we were able to hit the ground running with very little learning curve,” said Harris.
The intuitive interface has allowed the prepress team to automate many common tasks—from file intake to plate approval—with minimal manual interaction. “Once jobs are set up in the system, the pages flow in automatically, based on naming conventions,” explained Harris. “Files are auto-processed, viewable, and ready for approval without operator intervention. It saves us time and ensures consistency.”
Advanced Tools for Modern Production
Colorado Community Media is already leveraging key NewsWayX features including preflight, ink optimization, fanout adjustment, and page/plate approvals. One standout capability that has proven especially valuable is the platform’s flexibility around file intake and late-stage edition planning.
“Sometimes clients send files before we’ve created the edition plan,” said Harris. “With NewsWayX, we can build the plan after the fact, and the system will automatically recognize and route the files to the proper location. That’s a huge timesaver—it eliminates a lot of manual work.”
Reliability, Support, and Room to Grow
As a cloud-based system, NewsWayX eliminates the need for on-site RIP servers and related infrastructure. It’s a stable, scalable platform that gives the team confidence as they grow the business and add new clients. The support from ProImage has been another key advantage. “Their staff has been excellent—very responsive, helpful, and great at walking us through setup and questions along the way,” said Smalley. Financially, the cloud model has also delivered immediate benefits. “Not having to invest in servers or manage IT locally helped keep our startup costs down,” said Smalley. “And as we grow, we look forward to using even more of NewsWayX’s built-in tools to continue streamlining our workflow.”
A Future-Ready Production Environment
The successful installation of NewsWayX at Colorado Community Media’s Trust Press facility reflects the broader mission of the National Trust for Local News to revitalize local journalism with sustainable, modern infrastructure. With ProImage’s robust, cloud-powered workflow at its core, Trust Press is positioned to serve communities across Colorado with reliable, high-quality print production—today and well into the future.
