Hyperion: Management Solutions Mints $5 Million In Savings For Mail-Well

Press release from the issuing company

SUNNYVALE, Calif., August 19, 2002 -- Mail-Well, Inc., has recognized a $5 million savings by improving operational efficiency using Hyperion (Nasdaq: HYSL) business performance management solutions. Mail-Well specializes in three multibillion dollar market segments in the highly fragmented printing industry: commercial printing, envelopes and printed office products. Mail-Well has increased operational excellence, established best practices and lowered production costs, resulting in a significant return on its investment within the first six months of using Hyperion solutions. "As a result of numerous acquisitions and a highly fragmented market, we had a great need to improve visibility and best practices across the enterprise," said Michel Salbaing, chief financial officer for Mail-Well. "With Hyperion we can now measure the critical details and view the big picture to make timely and informed decisions that impact profitability. We have seen a $5 million savings so far simply by having the information necessary to staff our printing presses appropriately." After a period of multiple acquisitions, Mail-Well lacked a single system to quickly close its books or measure productivity. Tracking operational activities was especially complex because each of its 80 printing facilities has unique equipment, systems and processes. With Hyperion business performance management solutions, the company now monitors key metrics across the entire enterprise, including press runtime, cost per job, job completion time and number of impressions per hour. The company now makes better operational decisions that impact the bottom line, such as appropriately staffing and accurately planning production completion times. In addition, Mail-Well uses this data to identify and manage best practices and consistent business processes across all of its facilities, significantly improving operational efficiency. "Business performance management can have a significant impact on companies such as Mail-Well with its complex processes and operational metrics," said Nazhin Zarghamee, chief marketing officer for Hyperion. "Hyperion has armed Mail-Well with the actionable information and best practices that enable confidence in both results and reports. Hyperion delivers the analysis that Mail-Well requires to improve business efficiency and, ultimately, the bottom line." Mail-Well has also improved its consolidation and reporting capabilities, cutting the time required to close books from 13 days to five days. The company can now run reports at any time to analyze performance – depending on what business metrics it needs to track. For example, Mail-Well creates daily production reports, allowing the company to quickly alter staffing on projects. Other reports are produced on a weekly or monthly basis when a longer-range view is required. "As a key part of our operational excellence initiative, Hyperion gives us more detailed information and the ability to look at our operations from different angles," said Salbaing. "Now we have more than just spreadsheets filled with data. We have real information that has meaning and helps us be more effective."
