Paterson, NJ – In need of a replacement paper cutter after wearing out a 13-year-old machine, Tom Eubanks and Ted Varberg considered several options. The owners of American Converting near Charlotte, North Carolina looked at a few machines available on the market but soon reached a logical conclusion. Having replaced another machine nearly one year ago, they went back to their source and in the first of week of May had Colter & Peterson install a rebuilt 100” Seybold paper cutter with the latest version of Microcut®.

“We looked at a few other machines and price was a consideration. But C&P does such a good job rebuilding machines and the paper cutter we bought last year is doing exceptionally well for us,” said Eubanks, American Converting’s www.americanconverting.com Vice President and General Manager. “Bruce Peterson has always taken care of us and we didn’t have to worry about moving the old machine; they handle everything. They make it a turnkey job for us and stand behind their products.”

The newest addition replaced an 85” Seybold trimmer that was purchased from C&P in 2003, the year Eubanks and Varberg opened American Converting. Both are experienced paper industry professionals and they have found a niche producing divider pads in custom sizes for use in food packaging, furniture and other industries. Having a warehouse in Ontario, California and a sister company, Badger Paperboard in Wisconsin, gives them the capability to service customers from coast-to-coast.

With a growing business that now includes 32 staffers working from a 100,000 square-foot facility in the small town of Lincolnton, Eubanks says American Converting is taking advantage of handling small specialty runs in a quicker amount of time that larger paper converters can’t match.

“The 100” Seybold is a bit larger than the old 85” unit. It’s like the Lawson cutter we bought last year; this one allows us to cut faster and better suits our needs. We typically use 48” by 48” sheets of paperboard and cut it down into pads. Both the Lawson and Seybold cutters are a little stronger and beefier than what we had previously, and that helps since sometimes we get a custom order where the sheet size needs to be 100” wide. They do a better job for us.”

Eubanks said his cutting crew is very happy with the newest version of Microcut, the automated back gauge control system that is standard on almost every Colter & Peterson new or rebuilt paper cutter. The system guides the back gauge into position to deliver incredibly accurate trims at 1/64^th of an inch. It also can increase productivity by 50% or more by instantly memorizing cutting actions, which saves time and operator effort.

“The Seybold is cutting more material at .020-.040 pt. thickness, with a 6” lift for 8” by 10” pads. The larger cut area allows us to be much more efficient in our operation,” said Eubanks, whose crew cuts 10-hour shifts four days a week and a half shift on the fifth day. “The set-up with Microcut is more user friendly and makes everything easier for us to get the work done.”
