Press release from the issuing company

- Quad/Graphics and WCTC Partner to Create the Harry V. Quadracci Printing and Graphics Center - Gift From Quad/Graphics Will Provide Scholarship Assistance and Continuous Equipment Upgrades to Center for Generations to Come - Time Inc. gives $100,000, Heidelberg $25,000, MAN Roland $20,000 PEWAUKEE, Wis.--Oct. 11, 2002-- Quad/Graphics has awarded $1 million to the WCTC Foundation to benefit Waukesha County Technical College as part of a long-term, trend-setting partnership that will sustain the school's award-winning printing and graphic communications program. The company's contribution - made in the name of the late Harry V. Quadracci, founder of Quad/Graphics - will be used to continually upgrade the equipment on which students are trained as well as provide scholarship assistance to students interested in a career in graphic arts. As part of the partnership, WCTC's 1-year-old Graphic Communications Center will be officially named the Harry V. Quadracci Printing and Graphics Center in recognition of the many contributions Mr. Quadracci made to advance both print technology and education. "This historic contribution, representing the largest of its kind to any Wisconsin Technical College, will benefit the entire printing industry by enabling and inspiring students to pursue careers in printing and graphics," said WCTC President Carol Brown. "In addition, it ensures that WCTC will remain an educational innovator in printing and graphics education." The $1 million gift was made possible, in large part, by contributions from Quad/Graphics clients, vendors, employees and friends who gave generously to the Harry V. Quadracci Memorial Fund. Those contributions, which totaled $500,000, were matched, dollar-for-dollar, by Quad/Graphics' Windhover Foundation for a total gift of $1 million. "We are thrilled to be making this contribution to a cause near and dear to Harry's heart: higher education," said Betty Quadracci, president of Quad/Creative and publisher of Milwaukee Magazine. "What's more, the Center is attracting attention as a hub for research. Throughout his life and throughout his career, Harry pushed to improve the process of putting ink on paper through research and technological development. In addition to the monetary contribution (see below list of chief benefactors), press manufacturer Heidelberg will donate the use of a digital press - the first digital press installed at the 50,000-square-foot Center. The press, a Quickmaster DI 46-4 Direct Imaging Press, will be donated in the name of Harry V. Quadracci. Staffed with veteran educators and equipped with the latest technology - such as Heidelberg and Komori presses, a Heidelberg computer-to-plate system and Sinar Bron digital photography equipment - the Harry V. Quadracci Printing and Graphics Center will provide unparalleled educational opportunities. It will make graduates "immediate, constructive contributors to the printing industry, both here in Wisconsin and across the nation," Betty Quadracci said. "Nowhere else will you find a facility so well equipped and so thoroughly committed to providing true-to-life training." Furthermore, the Center reflects the vision and values of Quad/Graphics' preeminent founder. "The Printing and Graphics Center is a fitting legacy for a man who lived to advance ink on paper, both at Quad/Graphics and in the industry," said Thomas A. Quadracci, Harry's brother and Quad/Graphics' new president and CEO. "Harry's commitment to education was unparalleled because he firmly believed that with proper training and education, anyone could achieve more than he ever hoped to achieve and, ultimately, be more than ever hoped to be." Specifically, the Center boasts: * A 12,000-square-foot pressroom featuring multiple sheetfed and flexographic presses. * A bindery area, adjacent to the pressroom, featuring a four-pocket saddle stitcher, programmable cutter, folder and shrinkwrapping equipment. * Two platerooms - one for the lithographic process and one for the flexographic process - and featuring both conventional and digital production methods. * A digital photography studio. * An imaging center equipped with the latest software and color measurement technology. * A graphic design lab. * Three computer labs. * A distance-education classroom in which students can virtually attend graphic communications classes at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, giving them the opportunity to advance their education from an associate's degree to a bachelor's degree without ever leaving the Center. In its first year of operation, the Center made an impact in print-education circles, garnering the prestigious 2001 Frederick D. Kagy Education Award of Excellence. The award, bestowed annually by the Society of Fellows of the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation, recognizes one exemplary community college printing program. Creation of the Center was a collaborative effort among representatives from the printing industry, education and government who joined forces nearly five years ago to conceptualize and build a graphic arts education facility second to none and, in the process, fill a void for skilled graphic arts labor in today's highly technical printing industry. "Waukesha County is the Silicon Valley of the Printing Industry," said Thomas Quadracci. "The large concentration of printers in the area - some 350 - provides significant career opportunities for students interested in the graphic arts. And, now, with the Printing and Graphics Center, generations of students will be trained for successful, rewarding careers." HARRY V.
