CLARKSBURG — Clarksburg Publishing Company has expanded its commercial printing operation with the purchase of a full-glossy, off-set printing press, company officials announced this week.
The company, which owns and prints the daily newspaper, The Exponent Telegram, will soon offer advertisers in-house, full service print products and a variety of digital options, President Brian Jarvis said.
“This makes us a one-stop shop,” Jarvis said. “Our biggest asset is our ability to offer advertisers anything they could possibly need in print and digital.”
Employees and contractors spent part of the past week installing the two units of the press in the company’s building at 324 Hewes Ave. in downtown Clarksburg. Heavy equipment was brought in to move the two, 15,000-pound units into place.
Jarvis said products could include sales inserts, brochures, mailers, political posters, postcards, magazines and direct mail services for businesses, colleges, government agencies or non-profit groups.
Besides the new press, the company has added the additional equipment needed to do complete bindery work, including a cutter, collator, folder and binder.
“The reason we looked into purchasing the press is because there aren’t many options in this area for this type of work,” Jarvis said. “When we’ve had a glossy product in the past, we had to look to outsource the work.
“And (Publisher) Andy (Kniceley) and (Business Manager) Steve (Morris) receive a lot of calls to do glossy work. We see this as a new opportunity to increase commercial printing operations.”
The company already sports a busy commercial printing business, utilizing its main Goss press to print The State Journal, the Weston Democrat, the Ritchie Gazette, the Doddridge Independent, the Cabell Standard, the Putnam Standard and others.
That press is also used to print the company’s daily product, The Exponent Telegram, its weekly, The Bridgeport News, its new sports publication, NCWV High School Sports, and two mail products, The Harrison Xtra and The Salem-Doddridge Xtra.
The new press will lead to more jobs at the company, as a new pressman will be added immediately. The company also plans to expand its sales force and mail room operation to handle the additional demand.
Kniceley said company sales representatives will be able to work with clients to provide the necessary tools for a business’s success — from print advertising in newspapers to sales brochures to digital products.
Jarvis said the expansion demonstrates the company’s belief in the importance of print publications and value of convergence of print and digital.
“We have faith in printing and the combination of being able to offer all print products and digital products,” Jarvis said. “Our advertising representatives will be able to offer anything to our customers.”
