This week, Warren talks to Bob Dahlke Jr., of VISOgraphic, a general commercial shop based outside of Chicago. Founded in 1946 and owned by the Dahlke family since 1979, the company is about 65% litho, 35% digital, and starting to do more and more packaging. 2019 had been the company’s best year ever, and, VISOgraphic having been an early adopter of LED UV, they bought a brand new press in December, enjoying one great quarter of business before the pandemic hit. Sewing is often referred to as the "last mile" in the manufacture of sewn goods in terms of an overall automated workflow. Huge progress has been made in the level of automation, and an operator can be quickly trained to execute sewing of some types of items. But the fine work of sewing apparel is still out of reach. The Museum of Printing has one of the largest collections of specimen books from typesetting services, a business classification distinct from type foundries. At their peak around 1990, there were more than 4,000 typesetting services in the U.S. They set type for ad agencies, book and magazine publishers, and graphic designers. When word processing came along, these businesses lost the income from keyboarding, and desktop publishing finally did away with this once-vibrant industry. Watch Video

David Zwang talks to Jenny Johnson Wolf and Mike Wolf of Label Specialties. Based in Louisville, Ky., Label Specialities is a trade printer that uses every technology available, especially flexo and, most recently, digital labels using HP presses. They also offer a variety of finishing and die-cutting services so as to be able to handle whatever requirements a customer may have. Watch Video
David Zwang talks to Michael Duggal, CEO of Duggal Visual Solutions. The company started in 1963 as a boutique photo lab for artists and museums and has transformed with new technologies to offer a full gamut of visual communications—from high-quality photoprinting, wide-format printing and vehicle and building wraps,to fabrication services, to CGI and interactive digital multi-media. Frank discovered these tiny editions of the Boston Herald that were printed in the mid-1940s. These were special editions that were reduced in size photographically for shipment overseas to members of the armed services during WWII to give them a slice of home—primarily for the headlines as the text ended up about four points. These editions were sponsored by the Jordan Marsh department store and printed using offset lithography at a time when letterpress was the dominant printing technology. Watch Video
