Frank Reads the Classifieds

Frank found a 1975 article about the New York Times’ first entry into cold type (aka photocomposition). They initially used an MGD MetroSet CRT phototypesetter to set the classified section (what used to take three days was cut to 20 minutes). John Werner, then Director of Prepress Operations, was in charge of that transition and is quoted in the article.

My aunt was a career linotype operator (35 plus years) at the Buffalo News and was an ITU member. We clearly discussed the 1975 strike and upcoming automation, while at the time I was a RIT student learning of the new photo typesetting developments.
The union retained first right of refusal to reset any standing galleys even thought they were already set and possibly printed.
Her career ended with her succumbing to leukemia and I wondered if that may have been a result of a career in a linotype room?
