Cary Sherburne speaks with Founder Electronics President Larry Yang Bin about the company, their prepress beginnings and current offering in digital inkjet through the EagleJet brand.
Cary Sherburne: Hi, I’m Cary Sherburne, Senior Editor at WhatTheyThink. And I’m here with Larry Yang who’s the President of Founder from China.
Larry Yang Bin: Yeah.
Cary Sherburne: Welcome. Perhaps you could explain a little bit about your company for our viewers. Some of them may not be familiar with you.
Larry Yang Bin: Okay. Founder Electronics was established by Peking University. And Peking University is one of the most famous universities in China. Peking University establishes company from 1986. Now Founder Electronics is the biggest company to provide systems to newspaper, to publisher, to printing house, to broadcasting station, and to internet.
Cary Sherburne: So when you say providing systems, you’re not providing presses, right? Do you provide presses?
Larry Yang Bin: No.
Cary Sherburne: Just—
Larry Yang Bin: We just provide the pre-press.
Cary Sherburne: Pre-press.
Larry Yang Bin: To printing industry. But story changed because of digital printing. We can provide the digital press to the customer now.
Cary Sherburne: Okay, and so is there a brand name on the digital press now?
Larry Yang Bin: The name is EagleJet.
Cary Sherburne: EagleJet.
Larry Yang Bin: EagleJet is our inkjet printing system.
Cary Sherburne: Okay, perfect.
Larry Yang Bin: We began our inkjet printing system R&D from 2005. Now we have three series of product line. First one is H series. It’s focused on the variable data, black, white, or variable barcode printing. Second one is color label printing. The third one is the most important, is P Series focused on book printing, newspaper printing, some kid of the PoD [Print on Demand.]
Cary Sherburne: And they are color, except for the first one, they’re color inkjet, right?
Larry Yang Bin: Yeah, first one H series is black/white.
Cary Sherburne: Right.
Larry Yang Bin: But P series is color, yeah.
Cary Sherburne: Is color, and that one is commercially available in the marketplace now?
Larry Yang Bin: Yes, install the 3 in China market.
Cary Sherburne: Oh, terrific.
Larry Yang Bin: Yes.
Cary Sherburne: And how fast does it print?
Larry Yang Bin: The fastest speed is 150 meters per minute.
Cary Sherburne: Okay.
Larry Yang Bin: Yeah.
Cary Sherburne: And it’s a roll fed?
Larry Yang Bin: Roll fed, yeah.
Cary Sherburne: Roll fed machine. And then in terms of the other kinds of systems that you’re providing for other media like broadcast, what kinds of things do you provide to broadcast?
Larry Yang Bin: Broadcast, we do the video control system to providers of broadcasted TV station, broadcast station, to control to story to edit the video and audio.
Cary Sherburne: So it’s interesting to me, because when you look at the printing industry, what we’ve been going through in our analog to digital transition, they’re just doing that now. They’re starting to do that now. So are you helping them with that transition?
Larry Yang Bin: Yes, because we know the gap between the different medias become so smooth. So it means kind of the convergence. Yeah, newspaper and will all have some more video and audio content as well, as a publisher. So regarding to the printing industry, we have the very, very long experience before. 30 years ago we began the research on some kind of the Chinese character, because Chinese character is very complicated than the Latin character.
Cary Sherburne: Right, right, right, exactly. Many years ago I sold systems that could do Chinese typing. But it’s very, very, very complicated, but very beautiful.
Larry Yang Bin: Very beautiful, yes. We are the largest Chinese character manufacturer and designer in China.
Cary Sherburne: For fonts?
Larry Yang Bin: For fonts, yes.
Cary Sherburne: Oh that’s great. And so in terms of the EagleJet products, will you be selling those outside of China then?
Larry Yang Bin: Yes, yeah.
Cary Sherburne: Good.
Larry Yang Bin: Yeah we’re still in China domestic market, but for the international market we need to find partner.
Cary Sherburne: And so for your P series, the higher end one, what would be the approximate sales price for that press in dollars maybe if you can?
Larry Yang Bin: It depends on the configuration.
Cary Sherburne: Of course, but average.
Larry Yang Bin: Average we think is about 30% cheaper than the major competitor, in similar configuration.
Cary Sherburne: So, for example, about 30%, so that would be maybe just under a million dollars?
Larry Yang Bin: Yes.
Cary Sherburne: Okay, great. Thank you. And do you make the inks? Or how do you get the inks?
Larry Yang Bin: No, we don’t make ink, but we use some supply ink.
