J. Kenneth Garner to Chair GAERF, Robert Murphy Elected Vice Chairman

April 15, 2002 -- J. Kenneth Garner, President, Chief Operating Officer of United Litho, has been elected chairman of the Board of Directors of the Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation. After graduating from Randolph-Macon College, he began his business career at United Litho, and for over 26 years has served in a variety of positions at the company before assuming the role of president in 1992. For the last four years, Garner has served as a director for both the Graphic Arts Show Company, Inc. (GASC) and the Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF). Robert E. Murphy, Chairman and CEO of Japs-Olsen Company, was elected vice chairman. In addition to Garner and Murphy, members of the Foundation’s Board of Directors are James Hyder, Jr., President and CEO, Fetter Printing Company; Stanley E. Freimuth, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Fuji Photo Film U.S.A., Inc.; Gerald A. Nathe, Chairman of Baldwin Technology Company, and Raymond W. Lawton, President of Lawton Printing Company. Officers are Regis J. Delmontagne, President, NPES and GAERF; Raymond W. Roper, President, PIA, and Secretary, GAERF, and I. Gregg Van Wert, President, NAPL, and Treasurer, GAERF. The Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF) is a major source of financial support for research, education and career development initiatives throughout the printing, publishing and converting industries. GAERF was created in 1983 by the National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL), NPES The Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishing and Converting Technologies, and the Printing Industries of America (PIA). The Foundation derives its revenues from the major trade shows managed by GASC, and makes a wide range of grants on both a single-project and an ongoing basis. Since its founding, the Foundation has distributed more than $4 million in grants to more than 70 projects at more than 37 institutions. In addition to GAERF’s grant-making program, the Foundation manages three programs designed to promote a positive industry image and support recruitment and training of a skilled workforce. These activities include: MAKE YOUR MARKSM in Graphic Communications This campaign, aimed at 6 million high school students, will put career information into the hands of more than 65,000 teachers and guidance counselors in 32,000 highs schools nationwide. PrintEDSM PrintED offers a nationally recognized, industry-approved program for accrediting graphic communications programs at high schools, colleges, community colleges and other institutions.
