American Forest & Paper Association Releases September 2019 Printing-Writing Monthly Report

Washington, D.C. – The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released the September 2019 Printing-Writing Monthly report on October 16.

According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased seven percent in September compared to September 2018. U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers decreased five percent in September compared to the same month last year. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels remained essentially flat (-0.5%) when compared to August 2019.

Uncoated free sheet (UFS) paper shipments decreased four percent compared to September 2018 while the inventory level decreased one percent compared to August 2019. UFS imports increased five percent while exports decreased three percent in August 2019.

U.S. purchases of coated free sheet (CFS) papers in September decreased eight percent compared to last September while the inventory level decreased four percent compared to August 2019. CFS imports and exports both decreased compared to August 2018, down eight percent and ten percent respectively.

Coated mechanical (CM) paper shipments decreased five percent compared to September 2018 while the inventory level increased eight percent compared to August 2019. CM imports and exports both decreased compared to August 2018, down 23 percent and 17 percent respectively.

U.S. purchases of uncoated mechanical (UM) papers in September decreased 11 percent compared to last September while the inventory level increased 15 percent compared to August 2019. UM imports decreased 21 percent while exports increased two percent in August 2019.
