Schreiner MediPharm Introduces Innovative First-Opening Indication for Prefilled Syringes

Press release from the issuing company

Blauvelt, N.Y. – Schreiner MediPharm, a Germany-based global provider of specialty pharmaceutical labeling solutions for over 65 years, has developed a new tamper-evident security concept for luer-lock syringes. Schreiner MediPharm’s Cap-Lock features a combination of a cap adapter and label that firmly seals prefilled syringes for reliable first opening indication. The solution therefore ensures the primary container’s integrity by preventing undetected opening of the cap.

Cap-Lock is a specially constructed plastic cap adapter precisely placed atop a syringe’s primary closure to equalize any difference in diameter between the syringe body and closure. Then, a label with integrated perforation for tamper evidence is applied that wraps around the syringe body and the bottom part of the cap adapter. When a user opens the syringe cap, the label is partially destroyed – clearly and irreversibly indicating that the cap has been opened. This enables the user to quickly and intuitively discern any possibility of product tampering, protecting patients against administration of potentially counterfeit substances.

Using Cap-Lock in everyday healthcare settings is particularly easy, intuitive and safe: The syringe can be opened as usual and, due to the larger diameter, the adapter is simple to twist off even with gloves.

Cap-Lock from Schreiner MediPharm can be applied to syringes in a conventional production setting. Compared to shrink-wrap solutions, the application process requires no heat, making Cap-Lock also suitable for sensitive substances. The label can be provided with additional functionalities such as counterfeit-proof features, detachable documentation labels or light protection. The solution is adaptable to many commonly used syringe sizes, and both the label and adapter can be customized for color and design. Due to the combination of the adapter with the primary closure of the syringe, no additional waste is generated because both parts are firmly connected to each other.

At “PDA Universe of Pre-filled Syringes and Injection Devices 2019” in Gothenburg, Sweden in October, Schreiner MediPharm will present the newly developed Cap-Lock to an expert audience for the first time.

Cap-Lock from Schreiner MediPharm easily, intuitively and safely protects syringes against undetected tampering attempts.
